The Mistress of Evil is back in cinemas this October, with the hotly anticipated sequel to Disney Maleficent, hitting the big screens in just a matter of weeks! One of the nation’s favourite villains (second only to Scar from Disney’s The Lion King), Maleficent is the wicked fairy from the much-loved story of Sleeping Beauty.
First depicted in Disney’s animated classic which debuted in 1959, Maleficent cursed the young Princess Aurora after her parents failed to invite her to their baby daughter’s christening celebrations, declaring that on her 16th birthday she would prick her finger on an enchanted spinning wheel and die. Luckily, Princess Aurora’s three fairy godmothers were able to alter Maleficent’s wicked curse, so that on the princess’ milestone birthday, she would not die but fall into a death-like slumber, only to be awoken by true love’s kiss.
Fast-forward 55 years later, and the wicked fairy was brought back to life, in a live-action remake starring Angelina Jolie in the title role, telling the alternative tale of the Mistress of Evil, allowing Disney fans a glimpse into the character’s alternative version of the story. The box office hit portrayed a very important message; not all may be as it first seems, with the audience learning of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s notorious villain. Maleficent loved Sleeping Beauty as if she was her own child, watching over her as she grew up in the forest with her fairy godmothers as her parents tried to protect her from the curse, and that she was in fact the one to awaken Sleeping Beauty with true love’s kiss.
Now, fans of the franchise are in for a real treat, as Jolie is back in character and making a return to the big screen as Maleficent, in a sequel to the original live-action remake. Disney Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is set several years after the reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, and will explore the complex relationships between Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty as the soon-to-be-queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversities. Theatrical trailers suggest that the once-wicked fairy will make a return to the dark side, and we can’t wait to see how Disney has progressed this story - we’ve already got our tickets booked for when it launches in the UK on 18th October!
